Cyprus and commitment to reunification

first_imgOn 26 April 2004, following the referendum on the Annan Plan in Cyprus, the Council stated that it was “determined to put an end to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community and to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community”. A tandem initiative for economic integration of the island was decided by the Commission, with comprehensive proposals for distributing €259 million in aid and facilitating direct trade from northern Cyprus through a preferential regime that would allow the north to enter the customs territory of the EU. For all the praise accorded to Green Line regulation as a measure for incorporating the north, the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce reported a mere €7m as the value for the total spread of sales through the Green Line in 2005.The Commission’s financial aid regulation was approved by the Council on 27 February. These funds, if implemented, will assist with much needed infrastructural development, confidence building within the civil society and acquis implementation. But this regulation falls short of the assurances made by the Council and the Commission. No movement has yet been made to lift the de facto trade embargoes in northern Cyprus. It is imperative that the EU take urgent steps to signal our commitment to reunification and to the integration of northern Cypriots in the Union.Yesterday (3 May), on the two year anniversary of the Council’s pledge to incorporate northern Cyprus into the EU, a peaceful protest was held outside the Justus Lipsius building. Let this be a reminder that diplomacy is a two-way street and that the EU must fulfil its promises if it expects other governments to work towards change. Sajjad Karim MEPBrusselslast_img read more
