PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida football program, led by head coach Pete Shinnick, will formally announce its first signing class on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Media are invited to attend a press conference that day at 3 p.m. in the Argonaut Athletic Club on the main UWF campus, and the public is invited to a celebration at Seville Quarter in downtown Pensacola starting at 5:30 p.m. The press conference will be open to members of the media. Fans wishing to follow online will be able to watch a live video stream at GoArgos.com. News about the signees will also be posted throughout the day to GoArgos.com, as well as Facebook.com/GoArgos and Twitter.com/GoArgos. The signing day celebration at Seville Quarter is open to all Argonaut Athletic Club boosters, Football Founders, Kickoff Squad members, UWF corporate partners and Argonaut fans. Attendees will be able to meet the coaching staff and learn more about UWF football and the first signing class of football student-athletes. The celebration will be held in Phineas Phogg’s at Seville Quarter, and light refreshments will be provided. Football will be the 15th varsity sport at UWF, and the team will begin playing in the fall of 2016. The team added two Division I transfers in December, Blake McCall from Jackson State and Tyler Henderson from Florida Atlantic, and both student-athletes are currently enrolled at UWF. The prospective student-athletes that sign with UWF on Feb. 4 will commit to attending the University in the fall of 2015. The University of West Florida Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has won eight national championships, and UWF leads all schools in Gulf South Conference history with 79 league championships and 18 all-sports trophies. UWF President Judith Bense confirmed on Sept. 4, 2013 that the UWF football team will begin playing in 2016, and the University reached an agreement for the team to play its home games at Maritime Park Stadium in downtown Pensacola starting that fall.
