LG quiet on new smartphones but sees NFC as key to ‘smart life’ plans

In the last few years Justin has launched and grown a portfolio of premier media products, which include the Mobile World Congress… Read more Español LIVE FROM CES 2013: South Korean vendor LG failed to unveil a new flagship smartphone this morning, instead opting to use its early-morning press conference to highlight its ‘smart life’ strategy whereby all its consumer electronic products are able to talk to one another via NFC technology.With its presence at this year’s show focused around the strapline “Touch the Smart Life”, LG’s executives talked up the vendor’s plans to enable an entire smart home ecosystem.“This is about smartphone to appliance technologies,” said LG’s head of US marketing, James Fishler.The aim is to ensure LG’s NFC-enabled appliances – such as smartphones, televisions, laundry, ovens, robotic vacuum cleaners and fridges – can work together.“You can remotely monitor what the appliances are doing – you can tell the robotic vacuum to clean the floors before you get home,” claimed Fishler.“In the coming months you’ll see smart washing machines with WiFi, smart ovens that can have their cooking monitored from smartphones, and smart laundry machines. While smart appliances are clearly the wave of the future, we are working to produce this now.”In fact, Fishler said that LG will boast 27 ‘smart’ models in its entire product range in 2013.While the company talked up the launch of its new TV product portfolio, there was a lack of smartphone news.“At Mobile World Congress next month and throughout the year you’ll see us bring to life more tier one handsets in various screensizes, enabling you to enjoy the smart life,” noted Fishler.
